the life & times of an artist supporting the arts & ministry....
well, everyone, this has been a crazy week. i finally have more work than i can handle! a cause for celebration as well as sheer and utter panic. right this very second, i'm juggling creating visuals for a choir tour over presidents' day weekend (that's like, in a week), getting stuff together for the class i teach at wesley monday (that's two days from now), producing visuals for tuesday's chapel service at wesley (three days from now), and producing print work for a program at wesley (due at the printers the end of this month). i'm also trying to squeeze in photography work and editorial work for my church sometime soon (i haven't forgotten, i haven't forgotten!). and there's something else, but i can't remember what it is. oh yes, i'm helping out with brian mclaren's book tour, which stops at my church early march. it's not my usual visual work but involves my photography and coordinating some interactive and prayer stuff. long story. i'll try to explain later.
at any rate, i'm pretty well over-booked and running out of hours in the day to do everything well. as a creative person, i desperately need big blocks of time in a quiet place to get deep into my head so i can create something decent. i also need big blocks of time between creative sessions to kick ideas around and to sit with what i've created to make sure it's good and will work. that, of course, also requires lots of prayer and rest.
none of these things were easy to get this week, except perhaps the prayer part and the big blocks of time creating part. even though i was asked in november to help produce visuals for the choir tour, and had a draft program by late january, i only found out this past monday evening what anthems (i think there are 11 or so with four congregational songs) the choirs would actually sing. i knew it would be close, so i did a lot of advance, preliminary work, but i still had to wait until tuesday to develop the bulk of the concert visuals (this is perfectly normal in the worship and concert world, so i'm used to it). at any rate, once i finally got the word, i locked myself away in my church's library and spent three straight, solid days putting together visuals and shooting new images to use. by wednesday i had lost track of what day it was. by thursday night, my brain was beginning to crack. today (friday), i got the worship order for tuesday's chapel service, so i turned around and put together the bulk of those slides. then, late this afternoon, i got my hands on the anthem, which, by the grace of God, i've built out in the past and can easily use. hallelujah. tomorrow i'll finish the chapel slides. sunday i'll shoot more stuff for the choir tour, and will go to rehearsal so i can hear what exactly these anthems sound like. next week i'll finish the tour slides. and hopefully start the print publication due at the printers the end of this month, even though i still don't have any of the text. we'll see how that all works out. then i'll be on the road as the tour travels to falls church presbyterian, first presbyterian in lancaster, south carolina, and then back home for our homecoming concert. that covers next week through the weekend.
got that?
oh, and then there's all the administrative stuff i need to do for my dinky little business which i haven't touched since 2008 started. maybe next month.
pshew! it's tough to get a day off when you're a starving artist, that's for sure.
oh, and one final thing - the poster i put together for the choir tour is at the top of the post.
be well and happy. more to come! love to you! kim :]
