incredible email i received a couple of days after our annual Christmas concert, for which i provided visuals....

As we awaited the concert last Sunday afternoon it warmed my heart to see you sitting the "video" seat. I knew we were in for something very special...and so pleased as we brought six of our neighbors with us.

Again, I want to thank you for your exquisite art work on the screen accompanying the choir. I was amazed how you unobtrusively put in the English words so we could follow with the calligraphy words and pictures the deeper meaning of the exhilarating songs.

The concert had a very special meaning to me...and you had a significant part.

I had just been given word that my oldest brother was in hospice in North Carolina having battled leukemia for the past two years, so that was on my mind.

As I sat throughout Glorious Sounds I was being ushered right up into a tiny Glimpse of what I knew my brother was soon to experience~ in going Home to the Splendor and Majesty and All Embracing Love and Joy of seeing and feeling his Lord Face to Face...Jesus Christ~ The King of Kings, The Lion of Judah, The Anointed One....! He was the central focus...not just His humanity as a Baby...but His Resurrected Reign.

On Monday evening., my brother's pastor was reading to him the 23rd Psalm and as he finished reading the last verse "And I will dwell in the House of the Lord Forever" my brother's heart stopped and at that moment he experienced the REAL THING...what amazing joy!

Thank you for being His instrument for me in that experience.

This year finds me in a reflective mood especially due to the places that found their way under my feet and the events that unfolded before my eyes. I witnessed pain and suffering...some in the distant past, some in the too-close present. But all involved the loss of something...life, innocence, faith, joy, understanding, security.

There is a saying in Rwanda that goes something like this: the first time you visit, you are a stranger. The second time, a friend. The third time, family. In June, at the invitation of the gang at Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee, I returned to Rwanda for my second visit. I found that with friendship, comes an invitation. And with that invitation comes the happiness of sharing the Rwandans’ joy and the burden of sharing their suffering. Like last year, we visited a genocide memorial...this time, a Catholic church whose priest turned over to the extremist Hutus those seeking sanctuary there. What you see here is a cross placed on a fraction of the clothes of the 10,000 who were killed within its walls. Those lost represent a hundredth of those killed between April and June 1994. For the Rwandans, though it has been 17 years, this tragedy remains as fresh as if it all happened yesterday. The agony has not ended...the people just keep persevering...marking each day as it comes, taking each step as it approaches, working their fields as did their forebears, trying not to forget yet trying to continue. Nowhere was this more evident than the pain etched on the face of the female security guard when she let us in...as we toured the grounds we would see her with her head in her hands, tears streaming down her face.

Being my second trip to the land of a million hills, I think I felt more this time than the last...more thankfulness, more tranquility, more understanding, more anguish. I am thankful for all of these emotions because they remind me to remember those 1,000,000 souls who were lost, and the 800,000 genocide and AIDS orphans left behind.

The sheer numbers we are talking in Rwanda can make it difficult to consider individual loss...the impact on individual families...the impact on individual communities. In September, the tragic and untimely death of my dear friends’ 12 year old son in Virginia’s floods brought it all home. How deep and far-reaching and life-long-lasting the loss of one person can be. And yet, as we struggle to make sense of all this – whether it be the loss of one person or a million – I hold ever more tightly to the promises of God, as prophesied by Isaiah...fulfilled and made perfect in the life, death, and resurrection of his Son. And not just for those of us who have lost a loved one.

This year I also bore witness to news that a former employee of my church sexually abused students under his care. I walked alongside several of the parents. I also walked alongside several adult friends who were abused as children. All of this, coupled with the recent news of sexual abuse at universities, reminds me again and again of the brokenness of our planet and all who walk upon it. Some days it feels like the best and easiest thing to do would be to chuck it all and beg God to start over. But then I am reminded that God is alive and well and at work redeeming and restoring our world...as the people of Rwanda have shown whenever a genocide perpetrator tells the truth and asks for forgiveness. Whenever a genocide survivor gracefully and mercifully gives it. Whenever a perpetrator and survivor live and work peacefully side by side. I believe it because I have seen it. I have met these people. Life and wholeness can be restored. If not in this world, than in the next. God will not rest until it is so. It is what I hope for and have faith in and believe.

Along with deep sadness was abundant joy: amazing projects, a return trip to Bulgaria, moving and gathering most of my belongings under one roof, an incredible trip to Tanzania with OneVoice, a non-profit that uses music to connect kids around the world, and the addition of a rescue pup, Jax, who has, in turn, rescued me and cracked my heart wide open. Oh, and I got to ride a camel. :]

my last couple days in rwanda, i worked with true vineyard ministries out of san marcos, texas, which works with aids and genocide widows in the area of wool and weaving. i have loads of images and stories, but they'll have to wait as i need to turn my attention to getting ready for my photography camp next week.

p.s. after i shot these, isaac, jeanviere and i went to the market to fetch them a soccer ball. the next time i saw them was tuesday just as the last of our group...the remnant...were about to head to kigali to fly out. it was raining that day...and just as noon came round, who was running up the hotel ishema drive but isaac, followed by jeanviere. they were soaked...no umbrella...but isaac proudly wore more of his new clothes...and gave me some of the best hugs of my life. can't wait to see him again. miss him so.

in rwanda...both from the genocide and aids...in a country the size of maryland...that has also lost 1 million plus during the genocide and post genocide fighting.

when we met isaac, we were a disparate group of people from all over the place, most of whom had only met a few days previously. i think all of us were on this trip intending to help as many people as possible by means of a wonderful coffee company (land of a thousand hills) and its non-profit program (the do good initiative). i don't think any of us had the thought or intention to help just one person. it sort of flies in the face of what i believe and how i choose to give back what God has given me.

until we met isaac. who changed everything.

becoming friends with isaac didn't make me stop wanting to help as many people as possible...that is still where my heart and soul are...but he did make me realize that being in relationship with someone means more than just buying a bag of coffee or serving free samples to get someone else to buy one. being in relationship means more than just visiting a wash station once a year and renewing acquaintances. being in relationship means really taking a risk...really investing myself in someone's present and his future...really taking the time to listen and learn and experience life as a rwandan orphan through the eyes and stories of someone who is a professional at it. it means living out my faith genuinely. it means trusting God to provide for me so that i may be able to provide for someone else.

we decided as a group privately and personally to sponsor isaac financially in the near term as we equip him with the basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter, and in the long term as we try and get him enrolled in a local boarding school. right now, isaac lives with another orphan, 14 year old jeanviere, in pretty substandard housing. they have nothing. so we bought isaac some clothes, and both of them new mattresses and sheets and blankets. their first. we left some money so they could get a table and some chairs. and, after half the team left to return to the states, but before i did, i brought isaac back to the market to buy him what we promised but neglected to get...a soccer ball. probably his most prized possession.

here are some images of isaac, the master barterer, at work in the local market. notice the retinue we gathered as we made our way down the stalls.

shortly after these pictures, half of our group left to return to the states. three of us remained for a few days for various reasons. it was hard to say goodbye...we are united forever because of a little boy.

pastor ildephonse's new community

these folks really know how to make you feel good. what a welcome. and they sure know how to dance. makes me want to put down my camera and join in. maybe next year....

they also know how to feed you. we were late arriving what with the gas tank repair, so they crammed in three meals in five hours. captive audience, you might say.

not only did we get a great welcome, and great food, but an incredible opportunity to speak with a genocide survivor and a perpetrator, who served 14 years in prison, returning to his community three years ago. when he got back, he confessed and asked for forgiveness...and, seeing that he had returned to nothing, the community took him under their wing and has helped him get back on his feet. now they refer to him as an 'apologizer.'

only in rwanda.

after our meeting, these two joined in on our tour of the school and new orphan dorm, walking next to each other, looking like typical neighbors. and, when the pastor, saidi and manny all wanted to take part in our group picture, i even enlisted the help of the apologizer, teaching him how to use my camera in all of two minutes. that last image is by him.

right after the triumphant soccer match, we headed a little further inland over some of my most favorite bumpy roads in all of rwanda, because they bring us to one of the sweetest places with some of the sweetest faces you'll ever see. love these kids, this year and last.

were treated to a nice welcome, some wonderful hospitality, and a briefing by a very impressive teacher on the state of the school and its buildings, resources, etc. also able to meet the new pastor of bukonya, who seems to be filling pastor ildephonse's shoes very well.

plus, ran into our old friend with the harmonica...met him last year in the town proper; this year, he tracked us down far far from downtown....

so we were on our way to bukonya wash station, enjoying the sights, when we heard a sort of bang.

saidi stopped the rover, calmly walked behind, and discovered that one of our two gas tanks was trying to make a break for it.

we all piled out, the americans busily tried to figure out a solution, and saidi and manny calmly went straight to work. when we pointed out the jack, saidi made it clear he had other ideas, which evidently meant a tree would do the trick just fine. next thing you know, the tank was completely off, a funnel had been fashioned, and gas was being poured in the first tank.

saidi strapped the renegade tank onto the top of the rover, got cleaned up, and enjoyed some super fresh and super juicy pineapple. i gave him one of my tshirts to replace his, which was covered with who knows what, and so now caffe amouri in vienna has a supporter in rwanda....

only took an hour to tame that mutinous tank....

a day to remember

you will see in the images below the instant when we became permanently connected to rwanda, the time when volleyball created a bridge stronger than words alone, and the moment when two old friends - and likely brothers in arms - met again....

first up, isaac...the 12 year old orphan who captured our hearts and who eventually became the kid we agreed to sponsor together for as long as it takes to get him through school. more on isaac later. but, today, at least, once we met him, we couldn't shake him. isaac tagged along as we walked the streets of musanze, eventually ending up at the mother's co-op gift shop, where some women were hard at work, and then lunch with us at the ishema hotel.

later on, we left for an afternoon checking out the views from virunga safari lodge (see more info here). before we could get there, nikki spotted a volleyball game in progress on the grounds of a school. now, there's a story here...nikki is a star volleyball player, who will be playing division 2 ball at a school in south carolina, where she'll pursue a degree in physical therapy. for most of our trip together, we always kept an eye out for volleyball games in a land crazy about soccer...thinking it would be an outright miracle if we ever saw one. so when nikki saw the kids playing, we persuaded saidi to turn around and head back, where nikki and robb joined in, playing on opposite sides. afterwards, the joy that surrounded nikki as she high-fived the kids made everyone smile.

back on the road and finally in virunga national park, we got to witness a joyful reunion between saidi and an old friend, as well as beautiful scenery.

please note that is WAY unusual weather for june. the rainy season is supposed to be well past, but you could've fooled us. just glad we could see anything at all....

heading for the hills

while in kigali, we stayed at the africa new life ministries guest house, which we were sad to leave. wonderful accommodations and GREAT food. saidi is a pro at piling all our luggage on top of the rover and strapping it down, as you can see. please note the red straps, a gift from erik and larry from our trip last year. fun to see saidi using them still....

on our way out of town, we stopped at the genocide museum, a place of incredible information coupled with incredible sadness. heartbreaking to walk through, using the audio tour, and still being able to hear the passing rwandans, stifling their sobs. the hardest rooms: the interior, round sanctuary of sorts, where family and friends of victims were able to hang pictures of their lost loved ones, and the children's room, where images and brief biographical information (a three year old whose favorite toy was a ball, an eleven year old whose best friend was her mother, a five year old whose favorite food was rice) elicited some of the most profound choking sobs i have ever heard in public.

outside, in the garden area, near huge mass graves, women would fall prostrate on the ground, crying out for their mothers. museum staff members would hurry out mats, so those grieving could mourn in some comfort. the sound carried far beyond the garden area, and followed me as i walked around, trying to hold it together.

after the museum, we headed to the government warehouse where coffee companies hold their last round of coffee inspection prior to shipment out of country. this coffee is the first container's worth of ruli beans. since they belong to 1000 hills, we got to stand on them for a group picture. the image of two piles of beans on robb's hand indicates the difference between premium coffee and way less than premium beans. btw, love love love the image of saidi using an ipad2 to take a picture. most of the time, he took video, or cued up a video from jonathan golden, his beloved friend, and founder of 1000 hills coffee. it was hilarious. perhaps you had to be there....

as we were about to leave, we ran into an incredible stash of outdated coffee depulper machines that had been gathered around the country for disposal. we decided to help them out and rescued two from the bunch. robb has the one made entirely out of wood. mine is the wee little one that sort of looks like the littlest bear of the bunch...it made it back here fine and is currently living in my car until i repair a split in the wood....

finally, after having lunch in the SPREAD offices, and running into the man who had a huge part in the resurgence of coffee in rwanda, we headed for musanze, a two hour drive north into the mountains.

genocide memorial

after attending the english-speaking church service at the cathedral, we headed to a genocide memorial. this time, saidi, our intrepid driver, took us to nyamata, a catholic church where 10,000 people were killed after taking sanctuary within its walls and on its grounds. these are not all of the images i shot...this year i will honor the dead by NOT publishing the bones and skulls that are stacked in rows upon rows in an underground room behind the church. i feel that those memories are for me alone.

please know that the clothes belonged to the victims and represent the sheer numbers of people crammed into the sanctuary. and please notice the bullet holes in the roof.

somber day especially hard on our beloved saidi, who fought in the rpf during the genocide and lost 25 members of his family in the memorial we visited last year.

afterwards, we tried to lift our spirits by visiting the outdoor restaurant we patronized last year (not pictured), and walked and shopped along the streets of kigali.

ruli!!!

last year, on our last day in rwanda, we visited ruli's wash station, which was foreclosed on by the bank, and sat pretty empty except for a couple of guys and a random goat or two.

this year, we found a vibrant and bustling place of employ, where people are proud of their work, who they work for, and what they are working for.

after checking out the process from beginning to end, we had a conversation with two of their workers - including aime, who we met at bukonya last year. we then headed to mbilima, a village which contributes 100,000 plants' worth of coffee cherries to ruli, and whose residents...until one of the recent 1000 hills groups...hadn't had visitors in 50 years and had never seen white people (bazungu). we were the second. and were overjoyed to have such a hospitable welcome, including a tour of one farmer's 10,000 plants which masquerade as trees, and some warm fanta to send us on our way.

watch out for ruli's beans to hit late summer/early fall...and prepare to be blown away...in last august's international cup of excellence, bukonya came in no. 11 out of 320 lots. ruli came in no. 2. :]

pastor deo and the reconciliation movement

this was my second visit, and i found that, with friendship, comes the invitation. and with that invitation comes the happiness of sharing their joy and the burden of sharing their suffering. i think i felt more this trip than the last...more thankfulness, more tranquility, more understanding, more pain. i am thankful for all of it.

our first full day was all about reconciliation. we met with pastor deo, who works with prison fellowship, and has helped create reconciliation villages and a street kids ministry.

in these reconciliation villages, perpetrators of the genocide, who confess and ask forgiveness, are then reintroduced into their communities...perpetrators and victims live and work side by side, enabling healing to take place. in the villages, we heard from both perpetrators of the genocide and family members of their victims. the first village, the perpetrator killed several members of the victim's family. yet, they sat side by side beforehand, and while the victim spoke, the perpetrator held her baby. my eyes couldn't believe what they beheld.

in the second village, one of our own, chrystal, had a bit of an accident involving her head and the concrete pavement. after we cleaned her up and then cleaned up the floor, the perpetrator we had only recently heard from, comforted me by patting my shoulder. my heart was near overflowing.

finally, we visited the street kids ministry, run by pastor deo. we were greeted by singing and dancing, even the recitation of the 23rd psalm. then we got to watch them eat their one (big) meal of the day, followed by chores for all ages. reconciliation also takes place in this ministry, as children of those involved in the genocide learn how to be with one another. most of the kids are orphans...some live on the street, some live in families. they are fed three times a week. pastor deo hopes to expand that to seven.

the last couple of weeks i've been immersed in my latest project, creating visuals for my church's memorial day worship services. this is our fourth consecutive year holding this service...every year our music director and i start talking about the next one literally as soon as we finish. being the history major that i am, i pointed out that this year would mark the tenth anniversary of 9.11, and suggested we honor those we have lost in iraq and afghanistan. we knew the anniversary would be meaningful on its own, but after the death of osama bin laden, this service and its focus have become even more poignant and thought-provoking.

while these services are always difficult emotionally to create, i have a feeling this one is going to be especially difficult emotionally to get through. not only due to my recent trek to ground zero but also after crossing and shooting images of so many brand new markers at arlington national cemetery.

we have lost so many the last ten years, and all of them have been lost too soon.

thank you to everyone who has served our dear country. and God be with everyone who has lost a loved one in the service of our country.

this year, in observance of mothers day, i am supporting an amazing organization called 'to mama with love.'

to honor mothers everywhere, they ask each of us to share the love we feel for our own mothers - and other formative female figures in our lives - by sharing art and raising funds to support women around the globe who are changing our world. i encourage you to read more about them and then to do something about it.

but first, a few words about the women who have loved and helped raise me.

i have lived just about the most unorthodox life one can imagine. i have a nuclear, first family and a mother whom i love very much. but at some time and some point in my life, circumstances led me to conclude that there were a lot of people outside my nuclear family from whom i could learn and whom i could love. and who would love me in return. to all of these people...the moms in particular...i offer you my everlasting, ever pure, ever strong, and ever present love. and thanks. but especially my love. for you have given me myself.

i honor you this day and every day.
